The term rare applies to diseases that affect a limited number of people, with prevalence below a certain threshold codified by the legislation of each country. Brazil defines this limit at an incidence of 65 people per 100 thousand inhabitants. It is estimated that there are currently 13 million people affected by a rare disease in our country.
Although a national policy of comprehensive care for people with rare diseases was introduced in Brazil in 2014, diagnosis remains complex because they are easily confused with other diseases and treatment is not always available.
This explains why Chiesi Pharmaceuticals is committed to the research and development of new products for the treatment of people suffering from rare diseases.
